Composite Paperboard Market Size in Egypt

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Egyptian composite paperboard market, when its value increased by 8.6% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a mild decline. Composite paperboard consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons) was the main destination for composite paperboard exports from Egypt, with a 33% share of total exports. Moreover, composite paperboard exports to Turkey exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mauritania (X tons), twofold. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Turkey stood at +51.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritania (0.0% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+48.1% per year).

In value terms, Sudan ($X), Turkey ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for composite paperboard exported from Egypt worldwide, together accounting for 42% of total exports. These countries were followed by Tunisia, Morocco, Libya and Mauritania, which together accounted for a further 11%.

Among the main countries of destination, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +159.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average composite paperboard export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+35.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Egypt

In 2021, overseas purchases of composite paper and paperboard decreased by -25.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports recorded a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, composite paperboard imports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), Israel (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of composite paperboard imports to Egypt, together accounting for 56% of total imports. These countries were followed by Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic, Jordan, Italy, China, Portugal, Finland, France and Spain, which together accounted for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +27.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest composite paperboard suppliers to Egypt were Germany ($X), Israel ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports.

Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +24.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average composite paperboard import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+18.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
