Corrugated Paper Market Size in Egypt

The Egyptian corrugated paper market fell slightly to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -3% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 234% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, corrugated paper exports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 326% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Palestine (X tons) was the main destination for corrugated paper exports from Egypt, with a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, corrugated paper exports to Palestine exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ethiopia (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Madagascar (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Palestine amounted to +28.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ethiopia (0.0% per year) and Madagascar (0.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for corrugated paper exported from Egypt were Palestine ($X), Ethiopia ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 84% share of total exports.

Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +91.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Corrugated paper imports into Egypt rose notably to X tons in 2021, increasing by 9.3% compared with the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 1,492% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, corrugated paper imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 606% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) constituted the largest corrugated paper supplier to Egypt, with a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, corrugated paper imports from Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), more than tenfold. The average corrugated paper import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
