In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 64%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper and paperboard exports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 79%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Jordan (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Sudan (X tons) were the main destinations of paper and paperboard exports from Egypt, with a combined 50% share of total exports.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Palestine ($X per ton) and Libya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Sudan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports into Egypt

Paper and paperboard imports into Egypt fell dramatically to X tons in 2022, waning by -34% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 294% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paper and paperboard imports plummeted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 160% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of paper and paperboard to Egypt, accounting for a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, paper and paperboard imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), threefold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy totaled +2.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+14.5% per year) and China (+23.4% per year).
