Dry Vegetable Market Size in Egypt

In 2022, the Egyptian dry vegetable market decreased by -3.4% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed significant growth. Dry vegetable consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 73% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the amount of dry vegetables exported from Egypt reached X tons, surging by 14% against 2021 figures. Overall, total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +35.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry vegetable exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +52.0% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Germany (X tons), the United States (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of dry vegetable exports from Egypt, with a combined 49% share of total exports. Japan, Belgium, Poland, the UK, Cote d'Ivoire, Indonesia, Hungary, Russia, Croatia and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +115.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for dry vegetable exported from Egypt were Germany ($X), the United States ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 50% share of total exports. Belgium, Japan, Poland, the UK, Cote d'Ivoire, Hungary, Indonesia, Russia, Croatia and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +143.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average dry vegetable export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 52% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tunisia (+18.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Egypt

In 2022, supplies from abroad of dry vegetables increased by 1.6% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 94%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dry vegetable imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 82%. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest dry vegetable supplier to Egypt, accounting for a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, dry vegetable imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled -6.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+12.9% per year) and Spain (+11.4% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dry vegetables to Egypt, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+21.3% per year) and Spain (+12.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average dry vegetable import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 76% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Serbia ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) and India ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+65.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
