Essential Oils Market Size in Egypt

In 2022, the Egyptian essential oils market increased by 13% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, the total consumption indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. Over the period under review, the total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 58%. Essential oils exports from Egypt declined to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -14.6% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, essential oils exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -19.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

France (X tons), the United States (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main destinations of essential oils exports from Egypt, with a combined 63% share of total exports. Germany, the UK, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +9.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for essential oils exported from Egypt were France ($X), the United States ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 61% share of total exports. India, the UK, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

In 2022, the average essential oils export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, essential oils export price increased by +64.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Germany ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) and the United States ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+11.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Egypt

For the fourth year in a row, Egypt recorded decline in purchases abroad of essential oils, which decreased by -31% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 47%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, essential oils imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 55%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tons), the United States (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of essential oils imports to Egypt, with a combined 52% share of total imports. China, Germany, the Netherlands, Indonesia, France, the UK and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +12.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, India ($X), China ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the largest essential oils suppliers to Egypt, together accounting for 53% of total imports. The United States, Germany, Indonesia, Brazil, the UK, France and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

Among the main suppliers, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +16.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average essential oils import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 30% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 70% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ireland (+32.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
