In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Egyptian baby food market, when its value decreased by -8.7% to $X. In general, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible decline. For the third year in a row, Egypt recorded decline in supplies from abroad of food preparations for infants, which decreased by -23.2% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, baby food imports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. The Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of baby food imports to Egypt, with a combined 79% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Sweden, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, New Zealand and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 11%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +105.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest baby food suppliers to Egypt, together comprising 79% of total imports. Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices from the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) and Ireland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
