The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, frozen freshwater fish exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 3,703% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for frozen freshwater fish exports from Egypt, with a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, frozen freshwater fish exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Israel (X tons), fourfold. Russia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates stood at +141.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Israel (+200.8% per year) and Russia (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Israel ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Russia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for frozen freshwater fish exported from Egypt worldwide, together accounting for 93% of total exports.

Israel, with a CAGR of +217.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average frozen freshwater fish export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. In 2021, supplies from abroad of frozen freshwater fish decreased by -71% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 7,176%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, frozen freshwater fish imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 6,187% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Spain (X tons), Oman (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of frozen freshwater fish imports to Egypt, with a combined 55% share of total imports. Vietnam, Indonesia, Norway, Japan, Taiwan (Chinese) and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +99.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest frozen freshwater fish suppliers to Egypt were Spain ($X), Norway ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 51% of total imports. Vietnam, Oman, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan (Chinese) and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +85.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average frozen freshwater fish import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while the price for Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
