Garlic Market Size in Egypt

In 2022, the Egyptian garlic market decreased by -3.5% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In value terms, garlic production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. In 2022, the amount of garlic exported from Egypt skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 18% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 164% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 124%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Jordan (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of garlic exports from Egypt, together accounting for 43% of total exports. Russia, Slovenia, Libya, Brazil, the Netherlands, Palestine, Italy, Ukraine and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Palestine (with a CAGR of +191.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Jordan ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and Poland ($X) were the largest markets for garlic exported from Egypt worldwide, with a combined 41% share of total exports. Russia, Slovenia, Libya, Brazil, the Netherlands, Palestine, Italy, Ukraine and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

Among the main countries of destination, Palestine, with a CAGR of +234.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average garlic export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 23%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Palestine ($X per ton) and Lebanon ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($X per ton) and Jordan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Palestine (+14.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of garlic decreased by -53.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 146%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, garlic imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 145%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) was the main supplier of garlic to Egypt, accounting for a approx. 97% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +6.8%.
