Gummed Paper Market Size in Egypt

After two years of decline, the Egyptian gummed paper market increased by 8.4% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a tangible increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, exports recorded a buoyant increase. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gummed paper exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted strong growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main destination for gummed paper exports from Egypt, accounting for a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, gummed paper exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Jordan (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Palestine (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Saudi Arabia amounted to +37.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Jordan (+107.0% per year) and Palestine (+1.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for gummed paper exported from Egypt were Saudi Arabia ($X), Jordan ($X) and Sudan ($X), together comprising 68% of total exports. These countries were followed by Syrian Arab Republic, Palestine and Libya, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Syrian Arab Republic, with a CAGR of +124.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average gummed paper export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 54% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Palestine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Syrian Arab Republic (+72.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives), when their volume increased by 23% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 109%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, gummed paper imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a strong expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of gummed paper to Egypt, with a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, gummed paper imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Korea (X tons), with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-7.3% per year) and South Korea (+37.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives) to Egypt, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +11.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+33.2% per year) and India (+29.4% per year).

In 2021, the average gummed paper import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 80% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed strong growth. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
