Canned Meat Market Size in Egypt

The Egyptian canned meat market reduced to $X in 2021, waning by -13.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. In general, the total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +22.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 72%. In 2021, overseas shipments of canned meat decreased by -26.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 322% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, canned meat exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 204%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kuwait (X tons) was the main destination for canned meat exports from Egypt, with a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, canned meat exports to Kuwait exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kuwait stood at -1.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+10.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+15.2% per year).

In value terms, Kuwait ($X) remains the key foreign market for canned meat exports from Egypt, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Kuwait totaled +1.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+20.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+19.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average canned meat export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, canned meat export price increased by +79.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 46% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) and Kuwait ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Pakistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Egypt

In 2021, canned meat imports into Egypt reduced rapidly to X tons, declining by -76% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports faced a sharp reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, canned meat imports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a dramatic descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 63%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) constituted the largest canned meat supplier to Egypt, with a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, canned meat imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates (X kg), with less than 0.1% share.

In 2021, the average canned meat import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years.
