Iron Ore Market Size in Egypt

After two years of growth, the Egyptian iron ore market decreased by -X% to $X in 2019. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the market value increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2019, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

In 2019, the amount of iron ores exported from Egypt totaled X tons, growing by X% against 2018. Over the period under review, exports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2019, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, iron ore exports soared to $X in 2019. Overall, exports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports reached the maximum in 2019 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

China (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Serbia (X tons) were the main destinations of iron ore exports from Egypt, together accounting for X% of total exports. Jordan and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the UK (+X% per year), while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X), China ($X) and the UK ($X) constituted the largest markets for iron ore exported from Egypt worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports.

The average iron ore export price stood at $X per ton in 2019, increasing by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a significant decline. Over the period under review, average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2019, export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2019, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Serbia, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2019, overseas purchases of iron ores decreased by -X% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018, and then declined modestly in the following year.
