In value terms, lime exports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 381% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Sudan (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of lime exports from Egypt, together comprising 92% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Sudan (with a CAGR of +54.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for lime exported from Egypt were Sudan ($X), Oman ($X) and Syrian Arab Republic ($X), with a combined 93% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Sudan, with a CAGR of +52.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average lime export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 426%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Oman ($X per ton) and India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) and Sudan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (-0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Lime Imports
Imports into Egypt
In 2021, overseas purchases of lime decreased by -26.9% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 460%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
In value terms, lime imports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 229% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons) was the main lime supplier to Egypt, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, lime imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy stood at +1.9%.
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lime to Egypt, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports.

In 2021, the average lime import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.
