Lithium Battery Market Size in Egypt

The Egyptian lithium battery market rose rapidly to $X in 2021, growing by 6.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed strong growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Lithium Battery Production in Egypt

In value terms, lithium battery production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a significant decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with a decrease of 99.9% against the previous year. Lithium battery production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Egypt

In 2021, the amount of lithium cells ans batteries exported from Egypt totaled X kg, with an increase of 11% against the year before. In general, exports saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 556%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lithium battery exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 625% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X kg) was the main destination for lithium battery exports from Egypt, with a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, lithium battery exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X kg), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Sudan (X kg), with a 2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Saudi Arabia totaled +20.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (-16.0% per year) and Sudan (+35.1% per year).

In value terms, Kenya ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Lebanon ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for lithium battery exported from Egypt worldwide, with a combined 91% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Sudan, which accounted for a further 1%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Sudan, with a CAGR of +73.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average lithium battery export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 1.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 156% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+41.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lithium Battery Imports

Imports into Egypt

In 2021, the amount of lithium cells ans batteries imported into Egypt dropped rapidly to X tons, with a decrease of -51.7% on 2020. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 174%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lithium battery imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 106% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest lithium battery supplier to Egypt, accounting for a 19% share of total imports. Moreover, lithium battery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), twofold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +16.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+45.8% per year) and South Korea (-9.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the largest lithium battery suppliers to Egypt, together comprising 34% of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, the United States, Singapore, the Netherlands, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, India, Slovenia and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 34%.

Among the main suppliers, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +68.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average lithium battery import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
