From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+17.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of maize (corn) starch decreased by -22.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 117%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, maize starch imports declined markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest maize starch supplier to Egypt, accounting for a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, maize starch imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bulgaria (X tons), twofold. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 20% share.
