Malt Market Size in Egypt

The Egyptian malt market expanded sharply to $X in 2021, with an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -6.6% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, malt production rose remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -6.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 58%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Egypt

In 2021, overseas shipments of malt (not roasted) increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a dramatic slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 287% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, faced a dramatic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 259%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for malt exports from Egypt, with a 96% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia (X kg), with a 0.8% share of total exports. The third position in this ranking was taken by Lebanon (X kg), with a 0.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Rwanda stood at -38.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-62.7% per year) and Lebanon (-63.8% per year).

In value terms, Rwanda ($X) remains the key foreign market for malt (not roasted) exports from Egypt, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 0.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 0.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Rwanda stood at -35.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-61.1% per year) and Ethiopia (-64.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average malt export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 86%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ethiopia (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Malt Imports

Imports into Egypt

In 2021, supplies from abroad of malt (not roasted) decreased by -31.9% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports showed a dramatic descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 536%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt imports rose slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a sharp setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 543%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Belgium (X kg) were the main suppliers of malt imports to Egypt, together comprising 98% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +60.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest malt suppliers to Egypt were Poland ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising 98% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +62.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average malt import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 395%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
