From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, nitrogen exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 57,327% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Libya (X cubic meters) was the main destination for nitrogen exports from Egypt, with a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, nitrogen exports to Libya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Israel (X cubic meters), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Sudan (X cubic meters), with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Libya stood at -10.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Israel (+1.5% per year) and Sudan (+17.2% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for nitrogen exported from Egypt were Libya ($X), Sudan ($X) and Israel ($X), together accounting for 98% of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Sudan, with a CAGR of +6.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average nitrogen export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, rising by 6.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Palestine ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Israel (-1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Egypt
In 2021, overseas purchases of nitrogen were finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a tangible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 1,172%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, nitrogen imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 1,027% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Spain (X cubic meters), the United States (X cubic meters) and Hungary (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of nitrogen imports to Egypt, with a combined 85% share of total imports. Kuwait, Switzerland, the UK, Qatar, Italy and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +179.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest nitrogen suppliers to Egypt were the United States ($X), Spain ($X) and Kuwait ($X), together comprising 68% of total imports. These countries were followed by Switzerland, the UK, Qatar, Italy, Hungary and South Africa, which together accounted for a further 8.4%.
Switzerland, with a CAGR of +45.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average nitrogen import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, waning by -11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Hungary (less than $X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+18.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
