Orange Market Size in Egypt
The Egyptian orange market fell dramatically to less than $X in 2022, reducing by 99.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Orange Production in Egypt
In value terms, orange production dropped remarkably to less than $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The average yield of oranges in Egypt contracted markedly to less than X kg per ha in 2022, which is down by 99.9% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the yield increased by 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average orange yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The orange harvested area in Egypt fell significantly to less than X ha in 2022, which is down by 99.9% against 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to orange production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Egypt
Orange exports from Egypt declined to X tons in 2022, which is down by -11% compared with the previous year. In general, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +3.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, orange exports contracted to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), India (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of orange exports from Egypt, together accounting for 49% of total exports. China, Ukraine, Hong Kong SAR, Poland, Italy, Brazil, Romania, Bahrain, Singapore and Jordan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +1,832.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for orange exported from Egypt were the Netherlands ($X), India ($X) and the UK ($X), together comprising 44% of total exports. China, Hong Kong SAR, Ukraine, Poland, Italy, Brazil, Jordan, Singapore, Bahrain and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +1,608.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average orange export price amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahrain (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Egypt
In 2022, supplies from abroad of oranges decreased by -65.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 1,900%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, orange imports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 2,124%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the UK (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of orange to Egypt, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, orange imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Jordan (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the UK was relatively modest.
In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of oranges to Egypt, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Jordan ($X), with a 25% share of total imports.
