In 2022, ethylene oxide exports from Egypt soared to X tons, jumping by 58% on 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 231%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ethylene oxide exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 268%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Lebanon (X tons) was the main destination for ethylene oxide exports from Egypt, with a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, ethylene oxide exports to Lebanon exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Africa (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Lebanon stood at +64.3%.

In value terms, Lebanon ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for oxirane (ethylene oxide) exports from Egypt, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 28% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Lebanon stood at -19.7%.

The average ethylene oxide export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -40.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 186% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+32.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of oxirane (ethylene oxide) decreased by -79.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 394% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ethylene oxide imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 392% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of ethylene oxide to Egypt, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, ethylene oxide imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Italy (X tons), with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +36.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-5.6% per year) and Italy (+29.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of oxirane (ethylene oxide) to Egypt, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +31.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-2.5% per year) and Italy (+29.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average ethylene oxide import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 27% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 148%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+9.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
