In 2021, the Egyptian papaya market increased by 7.5% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, papaya exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 4,127% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for papaya exports from Egypt, with a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, papaya exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia (X kg), with a 1.8% share.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, papaya imports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 60%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Thailand (X kg) constituted the largest supplier of papaya to Egypt, with a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, papaya imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ghana (X kg), twofold. The United Arab Emirates (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Thailand stood at -8.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (-41.4% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+166.3% per year).

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of papayas to Egypt, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Thailand totaled -18.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+111.1% per year) and Ghana (-51.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average papaya import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.1% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, papaya import price decreased by -18.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 75% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
