Pear Market Size in Egypt

The Egyptian pear market shrank to $X in 2021, waning by -8.3% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Pear Production in Egypt

In value terms, pear production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +39.3% against 2019 indices. As a result, production attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, the average yield of pears in Egypt soared to X tons per ha, growing by 23% against the year before. Overall, the yield, however, saw a mild setback. Over the period under review, the average pear yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of pears production in Egypt fell dramatically to X ha, waning by -24.8% on the year before. Over the period under review, the total harvested area indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine-year period. For the fifth consecutive year, Egypt recorded growth in overseas shipments of pears, which increased by 1,522% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate significant growth. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pear exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant increase. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Armenia (X kg), Georgia (X kg) and Kuwait (X kg) were the main destinations of pear exports from Egypt, with a combined 72% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Oman, Qatar, Poland, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, which together accounted for a further 22%.

From 2014 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Qatar (with a CAGR of +135.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Armenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for pears exports from Egypt, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Georgia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 6.6% share.

From 2014 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Armenia amounted to +26.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Georgia (0.0% per year) and Qatar (+112.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average pear export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 9.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahrain (-7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Egypt

In 2021, the amount of pears imported into Egypt skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 19% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 906%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pear imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 215% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Lebanon (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of pear imports to Egypt, together accounting for 62% of total imports.

From 2014 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Lebanon (with a CAGR of +79.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Lebanon ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the largest pear suppliers to Egypt, with a combined 59% share of total imports.

Lebanon, with a CAGR of +75.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average pear import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 288% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Lebanon ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Greece ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
