Pork Market Size in Egypt

In 2022, the Egyptian pork market increased by 11% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Pork consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pork production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 44%. Pork production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of pork in Egypt declined slightly to X kg per head in 2022, approximately equating the year before. Overall, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the yield increased by 1.2%. Over the period under review, the average pork yield attained the maximum level at X kg per head in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for pork production in Egypt rose significantly to X heads, increasing by 6.7% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the number of producing animals increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number attained the peak level at X heads in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, producing animals remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of pork decreased by -2.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 353% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pork exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 310%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) were the main destinations of pork exports from Egypt, with a combined 82% share of total exports. Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kuwait (with a CAGR of +27.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kuwait ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Bahrain ($X) constituted the largest markets for pork exported from Egypt worldwide, with a combined 87% share of total exports.

Kuwait, with a CAGR of +33.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average pork export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 58%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kuwait (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of pork, when their volume increased by 48% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 125%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pork imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) was the main pork supplier to Egypt, with a approx. 97% share of total imports.
