Plastic Bag Market Size in Egypt

After six years of decline, the Egyptian plastic bag market increased by 0.9% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. Plastic bag consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X tons of plastic sacks and bags were exported from Egypt; falling by -20.2% against 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 126% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bag exports fell notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 97%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for plastic bag exports from Egypt, accounting for a 24% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic bag exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Libya (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Greece (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy totaled +5.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Libya (+2.8% per year) and Greece (+2.3% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for plastic sacks and bags exports from Egypt, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Libya ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Algeria, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Italy totaled +6.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Libya (+2.0% per year) and Algeria (+41.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average plastic bag export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 5% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, plastic bag export price increased by +71.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Pakistan (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Egypt

Plastic bag imports into Egypt contracted slightly to X tons in 2022, waning by -4.5% against 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bag imports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic bag imports to Egypt, with a combined 56% share of total imports. Turkey, Germany, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Poland and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +46.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic bag suppliers to Egypt were China ($X), Italy ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together accounting for 56% of total imports. Turkey, Germany, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Thailand and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +49.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic bag import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, plastic bag import price increased by +45.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 27% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+13.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
