Paddy Rice Market Size in Egypt
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Egyptian paddy rice market, when its value decreased by -4.1% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Paddy rice production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
In 2021, the average yield of paddy rice in Egypt shrank to X tons per ha, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 1.2% against the previous year. The paddy rice yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, approx. X ha of paddy rice were harvested in Egypt; approximately mirroring 2020 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a slight shrinkage. In 2021, approx. X tons of paddy rice were exported from Egypt; with a decrease of -9.8% against 2020. Overall, exports showed a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 2,516% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paddy rice exports declined slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 2,662%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Libya (X tons) was the main destination for paddy rice exports from Egypt, with a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, paddy rice exports to Libya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Saudi Arabia (X tons), tenfold. Kuwait (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Libya totaled -11.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (-17.3% per year) and Kuwait (-15.5% per year).
In value terms, Libya ($X) remains the key foreign market for paddy rice exports from Egypt, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kuwait ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Libya amounted to -3.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kuwait (-14.5% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-16.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average paddy rice export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 10% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, paddy rice export price increased by +72.9% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Libya (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Paddy Rice Imports
Imports into Egypt
For the fourth consecutive year, Egypt recorded decline in supplies from abroad of paddy rice, which decreased by -9.8% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports faced a dramatic setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 196% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paddy rice imports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 280%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Lebanon (X tons), India (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of paddy rice imports to Egypt, with a combined 60% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +65.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Pakistan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paddy rice to Egypt, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Pakistan amounted to -11.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+62.4% per year) and India (-42.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average paddy rice import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -16% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 154% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+13.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
