In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was significant decline in the Egyptian slate market, when its value decreased by -7.5% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, slate exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 1,580%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The UK (X tons) was the main destination for slate exports from Egypt, accounting for a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, slate exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Africa (X tons), sevenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK stood at +32.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-0.2% per year) and China (+132.8% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for slate exports from Egypt, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the UK amounted to +28.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-2.7% per year) and China (+87.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average slate export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -3.6% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, slate export price decreased by -15.8% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 119%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (-2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Egypt
In 2021, the amount of slate imported into Egypt skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 57% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 185%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, slate imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 157%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, France (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of slate to Egypt, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, slate imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France totaled +21.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+15.9% per year) and India (-17.5% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of slate to Egypt, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 12% share of total imports.
