Sorbitol Market Size in Egypt

For the third consecutive year, the Egyptian sorbitol market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -67% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a sharp slump. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol) decreased by -39.6% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 401% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, sorbitol exports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 563% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Pakistan (X tons) was the main destination for sorbitol exports from Egypt, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, sorbitol exports to Pakistan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tunisia (X tons), tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Pakistan totaled +123.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-16.1% per year) and South Africa (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) remains the key foreign market for sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol) exports from Egypt, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Pakistan amounted to +91.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-19.7% per year) and South Africa (0.0% per year).

In 2021, the average sorbitol export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tunisia (-4.3%).

In 2021, overseas purchases of sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol) decreased by -55% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 176%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sorbitol imports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a sharp contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sorbitol to Egypt, accounting for a 25% share of total imports. Moreover, sorbitol imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), threefold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +9.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-22.4% per year) and Turkey (+94.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest sorbitol suppliers to Egypt were India ($X), the UK ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 40% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Turkey, China, the United States, Germany, Indonesia and Italy, which together accounted for a further 19%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +66.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2021, the average sorbitol import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -26.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price faced a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
