Sorghum Market Size in Egypt

The Egyptian sorghum market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, declining by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Sorghum Production in Egypt

In 2022, the average yield of sorghum in Egypt stood at X tons per ha, leveling off at 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports from Egypt

In 2022, sorghum exports from Egypt declined rapidly to X tons, which is down by -70.4% compared with 2021. In general, exports saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 1,094% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sorghum exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 1,053% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Portugal (X tons) was the main destination for sorghum exports from Egypt, accounting for a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, sorghum exports to Portugal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Turkey (X tons), twofold. Morocco (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Portugal was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (-19.4% per year) and Morocco (+13.1% per year).

In value terms, Portugal ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for sorghum exports from Egypt, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Portugal was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (-19.4% per year) and Morocco (+18.7% per year).

The average sorghum export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 9.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 166%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+24.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Egypt

In 2022, supplies from abroad of sorghum increased by 56% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, faced a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sorghum imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 116% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) was the main supplier of sorghum to Egypt, accounting for a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States (X tons), with a 1.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +20.9%.

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sorghum to Egypt, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 2.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from India amounted to +38.9%.

The average sorghum import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a buoyant expansion.
