In 2021, the Egyptian soya bean market increased by 166% to $X, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed a strong expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, soya bean production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 45%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.
In 2021, the average yield of soya beans in Egypt shrank to X tons per ha, almost unchanged from 2020 figures. In general, the yield continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 3.4% against the previous year. The soya bean yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of soya beans production in Egypt dropped to X ha, with a decrease of -13.5% against the year before. Soya bean exports from Egypt declined notably to X tons in 2021, which is down by -81.1% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, showed a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 1,133% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, soya bean exports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 896%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) were the main destinations of soya bean exports from Egypt, with a combined 55% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +123.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Jordan ($X), Poland ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for soya bean exported from Egypt worldwide, with a combined 52% share of total exports. Morocco, Canada, Germany, the United States and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, the UK, with a CAGR of +90.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average soya bean export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 61%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Egypt
In 2021, purchases abroad of soya beans increased by 231% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw significant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, soya bean imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The United States (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main suppliers of soya bean imports to Egypt, with a combined 57% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Brazil, Russia, Argentina, Germany, Ethiopia and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 38%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Germany (with a CAGR of +267.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of soya bean to Egypt, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States amounted to +8.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (+8.4% per year) and Brazil (+9.7% per year).

In 2021, the average soya bean import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -59.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 49%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
