The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sugar exports rose slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for sugar exports from Egypt, with a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, sugar exports to Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X tons), threefold. Uganda (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Sudan amounted to +21.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (-4.0% per year) and Uganda (+18.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for sugar exported from Egypt were Sudan ($X), Kenya ($X) and Uganda ($X), together accounting for 70% of total exports. Libya, Yemen, Lebanon, Ethiopia and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +51.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average sugar export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 9.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 20%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (-0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Sugar Imports
Imports into Egypt
In 2021, supplies from abroad of sugar increased by 10% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, sugar imports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Brazil (X tons) was the main sugar supplier to Egypt, with a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK (X tons), with a 1.9% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Brazil totaled +1.2%.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sugar to Egypt, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 3.7% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sugar import price amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a deep downturn. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil amounted to $X per ton.
