For the third year in a row, Egypt recorded decline in overseas shipments of sweet biscuits, which decreased by -6% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -19.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sweet biscuit exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) were the main destinations of sweet biscuit exports from Egypt, with a combined 49% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the United Arab Emirates, Palestine, Australia, Iraq, Sudan, Jordan, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Morocco and Kenya, which together accounted for a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Australia (with a CAGR of +117.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Yemen ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest markets for sweet biscuit exported from Egypt worldwide, together comprising 44% of total exports. Overall, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sweet biscuit imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Italy (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main suppliers of sweet biscuit imports to Egypt, with a combined 55% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +21.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sweet biscuits to Egypt, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with an 8.6% share.
