Tea Market Size in Egypt

In 2022, the Egyptian tea market increased by 17% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a mild shrinkage. Tea consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After five years of decline, shipments abroad of tea increased by 457% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tea exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a deep contraction. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main destination for tea exports from Egypt, with a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, tea exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Lebanon (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (X tons), with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Saudi Arabia stood at +27.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lebanon (-12.9% per year) and the United States (-1.1% per year).

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for tea exports from Egypt, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lebanon ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Jordan, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Saudi Arabia stood at +27.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lebanon (-20.4% per year) and Jordan (-14.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tea export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -19.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sudan (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Egypt

Tea imports into Egypt rose sharply to X tons in 2022, growing by 14% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tea imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kenya (X tons) was the main supplier of tea to Egypt, with a 94% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka (X tons), with a 2.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Kenya stood at +1.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (-2.7% per year) and India (-16.9% per year).

In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tea to Egypt, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 4.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Kenya stood at -1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (-0.7% per year) and India (-17.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tea import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
