The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tobacco exports reached $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 1,280%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Iraq (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the main destinations of tobacco exports from Egypt, with a combined 51% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Libya, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Jordan, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Bahrain, Kuwait, Djibouti and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 60%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Yemen (with a CAGR of +42.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Iraq ($X), Lebanon ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for tobacco exported from Egypt worldwide, with a combined 49% share of total exports. Libya, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Syrian Arab Republic, Djibouti, Kuwait, Sudan, Yemen, Bahrain and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Syrian Arab Republic, with a CAGR of +59.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average tobacco export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 202%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Djibouti ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Djibouti (+36.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Overall, imports showed a significant curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 60%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tobacco imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a dramatic decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Zimbabwe (X tons), Serbia (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) were the main suppliers of tobacco imports to Egypt, together accounting for 69% of total imports. Germany, Romania, the United Arab Emirates and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +1,797.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest tobacco suppliers to Egypt were Zimbabwe ($X), Serbia ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 74% of total imports. These countries were followed by Romania, Ukraine, Kenya and the United Arab Emirates, which together accounted for a further 22%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +1,095.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average tobacco import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 55% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 169% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the price for Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+87.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
