In 2022, the Egyptian unmanufactured tobacco market decreased by -19.4% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Oman (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from Egypt, together comprising 97% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +926,533.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Oman ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and India ($X) constituted the largest markets for unmanufactured tobacco exported from Egypt worldwide, together comprising 96% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Oman, with a CAGR of +3,644,725.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average unmanufactured tobacco export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, unmanufactured tobacco export price increased by +50.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 77%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Oman (+293.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of tobacco (unmanufactured) decreased by -15.1% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 125% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 212% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) were the main suppliers of unmanufactured tobacco imports to Egypt, together comprising 77% of total imports. Uganda, Thailand, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, China, Greece, Germany and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +190.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest unmanufactured tobacco suppliers to Egypt were India ($X), Brazil ($X) and Malawi ($X), with a combined 78% share of total imports. Uganda, Thailand, China, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Greece, France and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +282.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average unmanufactured tobacco import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+31.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
