In 2021, the Egyptian canned food market decreased by -2.4% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption posted resilient growth. Canned food consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of canned food decreased by -11.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, canned food exports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
Exports by Country
Palestine (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Libya (X tons) were the main destinations of canned food exports from Egypt, together comprising 39% of total exports. Jordan, Brazil, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Kuwait, Iraq and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 48%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +91.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for canned food exported from Egypt were the United States ($X), Libya ($X) and Jordan ($X), together accounting for 36% of total exports. These countries were followed by Palestine, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Kuwait, Italy, Germany, Iraq and Greece, which together accounted for a further 43%.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +90.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average canned food export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 10% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 107%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Palestine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Egypt
For the third year in a row, Egypt recorded decline in overseas purchases of canned food, which decreased by -4.2% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 218% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, canned food imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of canned food imports to Egypt, with a combined 54% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, China, Turkey, Sweden, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 29%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +166.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest canned food suppliers to Egypt were the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 65% of total imports. Thailand, China, Turkey, Sweden, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
Among the main suppliers, Sweden, with a CAGR of +157.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average canned food import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 110% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+21.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
