Watermelon Market Size in Egypt

In 2021, the Egyptian watermelon market increased by 2.3% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, watermelon exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 76%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Kuwait (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) were the main destinations of watermelon exports from Egypt, together accounting for 64% of total exports. Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Seychelles, Turkey, Oman and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Seychelles (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for watermelon exported from Egypt were Kuwait ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Lebanon ($X), together comprising 57% of total exports. Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Seychelles, Turkey, Oman and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

The average watermelon export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, watermelon export price increased by +71.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 59% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

After four years of decline, overseas purchases of watermelons increased by 110% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 234%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, watermelon imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a measured expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 225%. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons), Oman (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of watermelon imports to Egypt, together accounting for 98% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +45.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of watermelons to Egypt, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.
