Wheat Gluten Market Size in Egypt

In 2022, the Egyptian wheat gluten market decreased by -3.5% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a significant expansion. Wheat gluten consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, wheat gluten exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports faced a precipitous descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 3,212%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of wheat gluten decreased by -15.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 69% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, wheat gluten imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 82%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of wheat gluten to Egypt, with a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, wheat gluten imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Lithuania (X tons), with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to +10.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+3.4% per year) and Lithuania (+68.6% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wheat gluten to Egypt, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Lithuania, with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany totaled +12.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+5.5% per year) and Lithuania (+68.4% per year).

In 2022, the average wheat gluten import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 21% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Russia ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) and Lithuania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
