Wheat Starch Market Size in Egypt

In 2021, the Egyptian wheat starch market decreased by -6.8% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. For the fourth consecutive year, Egypt recorded decline in overseas shipments of wheat starch, which decreased by -90.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports faced a significant contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 378%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wheat starch exports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp setback. Libya (X tons) was the main destination for wheat starch exports from Egypt, accounting for a 64% share of total exports. In value terms, Libya ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for wheat starch exports from Egypt, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sudan ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Libya totaled -21.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (-19.3% per year) and Kuwait (0.0% per year).

The average wheat starch export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 25%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. Imports into Egypt

In 2021, imports of wheat starch into Egypt expanded slightly to X tons, surging by 1.6% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports enjoyed a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 263% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wheat starch imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 215% against the previous year. Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Argentina ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
