Wine Market Size in Egypt
After four years of growth, the Egyptian wine market decreased by -2.5% to $X in 2021. In general, the total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +53.5% against 2016 indices. Wine consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.

In value terms, wine production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 180%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports from Egypt
In 2021, overseas shipments of wine increased by 87% to X litres, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 808%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 899% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Mongolia (X litres) was the main destination for wine exports from Egypt, with a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, wine exports to Mongolia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X litres), sixfold. Japan (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Mongolia was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+154.0% per year) and Japan (+58.5% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for wine exports from Egypt, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mongolia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to France totaled +194.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mongolia (0.0% per year) and Japan (+56.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average wine export price stood at $X per litre in 2021, reducing by -12.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 222%. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Mongolia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+19.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Wine Imports
Imports into Egypt
After four years of growth, overseas purchases of wine decreased by -26.8% to X litres in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 1,146% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X litres in 2020, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, wine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 2,081% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Italy (X litres), France (X litres) and Germany (X litres) were the main suppliers of wine imports to Egypt, with a combined 56% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the UK, Poland, Belgium and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 8.7%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +290.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wine to Egypt, comprising 21% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 2.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from France stood at +28.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+44.3% per year) and Poland (+338.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average wine import price stood at $X per litre in 2021, picking up by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 75% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per litre), while the price for Germany ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+27.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
