In 2022, the Estonian cherry and sour cherry market increased by 6.3% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a temperate expansion. Cherry and sour cherry consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Production of Cherries and Sour Cherries in Estonia

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production faced a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of cherries and sour cherries in Estonia reached X kg per ha in 2022, approximately equating the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 44%. The cherry and sour cherry yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. In 2022, approx. X tons of cherries and sour cherries were exported from Estonia; which is down by -52.5% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 2,206%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 2,203% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for cherry and sour cherry exports from Estonia, accounting for a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, cherry and sour cherry exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Latvia (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Spain was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Latvia (+34.5% per year) and Finland (-5.3% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for cherries and sour cherries exports from Estonia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Latvia ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Spain was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Latvia (+33.6% per year) and Finland (-10.9% per year).

The average cherry and sour cherry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -4.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 27%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Latvia (-0.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports of Cherries and Sour Cherries

Imports into Estonia

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of cherries and sour cherries decreased by -18.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 99% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Greece (X tons) constituted the largest cherry and sour cherry supplier to Estonia, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, cherry and sour cherry imports from Greece exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), twofold. Latvia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Greece totaled +65.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-2.1% per year) and Latvia (+10.1% per year).

In value terms, Greece ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cherries and sour cherries to Estonia, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 27% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Greece amounted to +61.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-4.1% per year) and Italy (+30.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cherry and sour cherry import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 51%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+12.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
