Pork Market Size in Estonia

The Estonian pork market fell slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -3.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a pronounced decrease. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Pork Production in Estonia

In value terms, pork production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of pork in Estonia stood at X kg per head in 2022, leveling off at the year before. In general, the yield continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average pork yield reached the maximum level at X kg per head in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for pork production in Estonia totaled X heads, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 21%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pork exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Latvia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Finland (X tons) were the main destinations of pork exports from Estonia, with a combined 89% share of total exports. Germany, Romania and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.2%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +47.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Latvia ($X), Lithuania ($X) and Finland ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for pork exported from Estonia worldwide, together comprising 88% of total exports. Germany, Romania and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Germany, with a CAGR of +49.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average pork export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pork Imports

Imports into Estonia

Pork imports into Estonia declined modestly to X tons in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 6.7%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pork imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of pork imports to Estonia, with a combined 58% share of total imports. Denmark, Latvia, Spain and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Latvia (with a CAGR of +14.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and Finland ($X) constituted the largest pork suppliers to Estonia, together comprising 56% of total imports. Denmark, Latvia, Spain and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

The average pork import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Latvia ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Finland ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
