Tomato Market Size in Estonia
In 2022, the Estonian tomato market increased by 5.7% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Tomato Production in Estonia
In value terms, tomato production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production faced a sharp descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 69%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The average yield of tomatoes in Estonia contracted markedly to X tons per ha in 2022, dropping by -63.3% against the previous year's figure. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 34%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tomato exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Latvia (X tons) was the main destination for tomato exports from Estonia, accounting for a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, tomato exports to Latvia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Finland (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Latvia amounted to +14.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (+26.5% per year) and Lithuania (-11.1% per year).
In value terms, Latvia ($X) remains the key foreign market for tomatoes exports from Estonia, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Latvia amounted to +12.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (+34.4% per year) and Lithuania (-13.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average tomato export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Finland (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Estonia
Tomato imports into Estonia totaled X tons in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 15%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, tomato imports rose notably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the main suppliers of tomato imports to Estonia, with a combined 82% share of total imports. Turkey, Latvia, Poland and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +24.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest tomato suppliers to Estonia were Spain ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Morocco ($X), together comprising 83% of total imports. Turkey, Latvia, Poland and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.9%.
Among the main suppliers, Belgium, with a CAGR of +22.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average tomato import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while the price for Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
