After two years of decline, the Estonian twine and cordage market increased by 318% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption recorded a measured increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, exports of twine, cordage, rope and cables from Estonia contracted to X tons, waning by -9.6% against the year before. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 190% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, twine and cordage exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
Denmark (X tons) was the main destination for twine and cordage exports from Estonia, accounting for a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, twine and cordage exports to Denmark exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belarus (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ukraine (X tons), with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Denmark amounted to +209.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+59.9% per year) and Ukraine (+88.6% per year).
In value terms, Denmark ($X) remains the key foreign market for twine, cordage, rope and cables exports from Estonia, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Norway, with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Denmark amounted to +224.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+47.3% per year) and Norway (+35.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average twine and cordage export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, twine and cordage export price increased by +79.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 64% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sweden (+13.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Estonia
In 2022, purchases abroad of twine, cordage, rope and cables was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, twine and cordage imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 43%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) were the main suppliers of twine and cordage imports to Estonia, together accounting for 55% of total imports. Portugal, Germany, Lithuania, Finland, Taiwan (Chinese), Sweden, Ecuador, India, Greece and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ecuador (with a CAGR of +186.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and Denmark ($X) appeared to be the largest twine and cordage suppliers to Estonia, with a combined 38% share of total imports. Germany, the United States, Latvia, Ecuador, Lithuania, Finland, Portugal, Sweden, India and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 48%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Ecuador, with a CAGR of +169.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average twine and cordage import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -16.1% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 37%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
