The Estonian flax fabric market fell rapidly to $X in 2022, which is down by -33.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a significant contraction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 124%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, flax fabric exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Lithuania (X tons) was the main destination for flax fabric exports from Estonia, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, flax fabric exports to Lithuania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Greece (X tons), fourfold. Latvia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2020 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Lithuania totaled +49.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Greece (+705.5% per year) and Latvia (+132.5% per year).

In value terms, Lithuania ($X) remains the key foreign market for woven fabrics of flax exports from Estonia, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Greece ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Latvia, with a 12% share.

From 2020 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Lithuania totaled -21.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Greece (+316.2% per year) and Latvia (+18.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average flax fabric export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -52.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a dramatic slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 a decrease of -42.3% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Finland (-46.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Estonia

In 2022, purchases abroad of woven fabrics of flax decreased by -12.7% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, flax fabric imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Belarus (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of flax fabric to Estonia, accounting for a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, flax fabric imports from Belarus exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2020 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belarus was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+1,628.3% per year) and Lithuania (+37.4% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X) constituted the largest supplier of woven fabrics of flax to Estonia, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lithuania ($X), with a 3.4% share of total imports.

From 2020 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Belarus amounted to -9.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (+5.9% per year) and China (+446.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average flax fabric import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -26.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price faced a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 5.9% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-9.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
