Banana Market Size in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian banana market expanded significantly to $X in 2022, growing by 6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, banana exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 136% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Somalia (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) were the main destinations of banana exports from Ethiopia.

In value terms, the largest markets for banana exported from Ethiopia were Somalia ($X) and Djibouti ($X).

Banana imports into Ethiopia skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, picking up by 22% against 2021. Overall, imports, however, faced a significant decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 35%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, banana imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main banana supplier to Ethiopia, with a approx. 100% share of total imports.
