Egypt (X kg) was the main destination for candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports from Ethiopia, with a 85% share of total exports. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 178% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Pakistan (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main suppliers of candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports to Ethiopia, together comprising 62% of total imports. India, China, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Turkey, Brazil and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
