In value terms, carrot and turnip exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 723% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Somalia (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) were the main destinations of carrot and turnip exports from Ethiopia.

Imports into Ethiopia
Carrot and turnip imports into Ethiopia reduced to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -5.2% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 238% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carrot and turnip imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 168%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main carrot and turnip supplier to Ethiopia, accounting for a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, carrot and turnip imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X kg), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X kg), with a 2.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United Arab Emirates stood at +16.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-5.1% per year) and Germany (-15.1% per year).
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carrots and turnips to Ethiopia, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 1.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United Arab Emirates totaled +7.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-10.3% per year) and China (-3.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average carrot and turnip import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 7.9%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
