Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chili and pepper exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a dramatic decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 97%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The UK (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main destinations of chili and pepper exports from Ethiopia, together comprising 48% of total exports.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ethiopia

In 2022, the amount of chilies and peppers (green) imported into Ethiopia fell sharply to X tons, which is down by -37.3% on the year before. In general, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 744% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chili and pepper imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 693%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main supplier of chili and pepper to Ethiopia, with a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates (X kg), with a 2.9% share of total imports.
