Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, composite laboratory reagents exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2018. In general, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 191% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2018, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Niger (X tons), India (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) were the main destinations of composite laboratory reagents exports from Ethiopia, together comprising 90% of total exports.

From 2014 to 2018, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +57.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for composite laboratory reagents exported from Ethiopia were India ($X), Niger ($X) and Uganda ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports. Iraq and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.3%.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +48.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average composite laboratory reagents export price stood at $X per ton in 2018, which is down by -23.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 113% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2018, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2018, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Ethiopia

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of composite diagnostic or laboratory reagents decreased by -8% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 55%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, composite laboratory reagents imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 173%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of composite laboratory reagents to Ethiopia, accounting for a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, composite laboratory reagents imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), fivefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +24.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+13.9% per year) and Germany (-1.1% per year).

Over the period under review, the import price posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+41.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
