Animal Guts Market Size in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian animal guts market shrank to $X in 2022, waning by -10.1% against the previous year. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for animal guts exports from Ethiopia, with a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, animal guts exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), fivefold. Egypt (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Vietnam stood at -17.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+4.9% per year) and Egypt (-12.9% per year).

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for guts, bladders and stomachs of animals exports from Ethiopia, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Vietnam stood at -18.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (-0.7% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-17.5% per year).

Overall, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, animal guts export price increased by +20.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of guts, bladders and stomachs of animals, when their volume decreased by -6.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 124% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
