Handbag Market Size in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian handbag market shrank to $X in 2022, falling by -1.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Handbag Production in Ethiopia

In value terms, handbag production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. After four years of growth, overseas shipments of handbags decreased by -15.8% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 450% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, handbag exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 274% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United States (X units) was the main destination for handbag exports from Ethiopia, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, handbag exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X units), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Italy (X units), with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States stood at +81.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+118.9% per year) and Italy (-13.5% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for handbags exports from Ethiopia, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 5.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 1.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States totaled +83.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+106.4% per year) and Italy (+6.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average handbag export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 190%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to France ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+23.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ethiopia

In 2022, approx. X units of handbags were imported into Ethiopia; falling by -26.6% against 2021. In general, imports saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 91%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, handbag imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 156% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest handbag supplier to Ethiopia, with a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, handbag imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X units), fivefold. Germany (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled -12.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (-5.9% per year) and Germany (+8.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of handbags to Ethiopia, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 7.7% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled -3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+21.2% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+14.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average handbag import price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 7.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 283% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while the price for Germany ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
