In general, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +69.9% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

The United States (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of hop exports from Ethiopia, together comprising 64% of total exports.

In value terms, the largest markets for hop exported from Ethiopia were the United States ($X), Israel ($X) and Sudan ($X), together accounting for 63% of total exports. Canada, Germany, Sweden and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, the UK, with a CAGR of +91.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average hop export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Israel (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ethiopia
In 2022, purchases abroad of hops was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 165%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hop imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 262% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) was the main hop supplier to Ethiopia, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to -7.1%.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hops to Ethiopia.
